Computer theory

case = carcasa

unscrew = desatornillar

cover = tapa

What is inside a computer? In this unit you will learn the basic electronic components that make computers work. Most of these components exist in all types of computers ranging from laptop PCs, desktops, gaming computers, tablet devices, servers, consoles, and even mobile phones.

heatsink / radiator = disipador

fan = ventilador

thermal paste = pasta térmica

thermal pad = almohadilla térmica

What are GPUs? Why is gaming best on desktop computers?

Notch = muesca

Slot = ranura

Corrosion = oxidación / corrosión

Graphics processing units or “graphics cards” are devices focused on rendering images and generating 3D graphics.

They differ from CPUs in the number of cores and their power. While CPUs have few cores (less than 32) with high power, GPUs have lots of cores (tens of thousands) with less power. This renders them useful for matrix and vector calculations, which also makes them good for AI.

SoC = System on Chip (CPU + GPU + RAM)

Listening - Computer says no

The British ________ (1) themselves on being the rudest most unhelpful people in the world. Receptionist Carol Beer is working at this Hospital in Pennsylvania.

– (Mom) Hello! This is my daughter she's a big ________ (2) girl and she's going to have an operation today.

– (Carol) I’ve got her down for a double hip (cadera) ________ (5).

– (Mom) Oh no, there must be some kind of mistake

– (Carol) Computer says no…

– (Mom) Well that must be some other Danielle Lloyd!

– (Carol) Computer says no…. There’s only one Danielle Lloyd on the system. (Do) you want the double hip replacement OR NOT?

– (Mom) No! Clearly she doesn’t need it!

– (Carol) Well she ________ (6) do (need it) in the future…

– (Mom) Look we saw Dr Phillips last week and she ________ (7) has an appointment for today to have her tonsils removed.

– (Mom) Well thank you so much. You’ve been just great.

– (Carol) Oh, ________ (9) I borrow a moment of your time to fill out the customer service questionnaire? Would you say that I've been “A. very helpful”, “B. extremely helpful”, or “C. ________ (10)” helpful?

– (Danielle) <Gasps>

Microcontroller vs. microprocessor

If you are into electronics, you may have heard about MCU (Micro Controller Units).

This confusion increased with the appearance of the Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer (with a full CPU, so it is no a MCU).
